INCA TOPS AND THE YANAPACO INITIATIVE: THE LEGACY OF THE BLACK ALPACA
To speak of sustainability is to speak of commitment, planning, and execution.
At Inca Tops, we are pleased to highlight the Black Alpaka initiative, also known as Yanapaco (Quechua term for "black alpaca") which emerged in response to the significant decline in the population of pure black alpacas in the Andean region of Peru, which today represents a concerning -1% of the national total.
Our project operates under the aegis of the Fundo Pacomarca, the first genetic research station in Peru and the world, belonging to the textile division of the Grupo Inca. At this station, we work hand in hand with local alpaca breeders, with the aim of cultivating a pure black alpaca fiber, characterized by its unmatched hue and fineness.
It is worth noting that the Fundo Pacomarca houses the largest global concentration of pure black alpacas, boasting approximately 700 specimens in its facilities.
As for the acquired fiber, it undergoes a rigorous selection process in our facilities, one that intertwines the tradition of manual selection with new generations and is subsequently transformed into high-quality alpaca yarns. Now, when it comes to funding, sales from products made with Black Alpaca fiber allow the Inca Group to continually strengthen and finance our research programs and provide essential support to the alpaca producers associated with Pacomarca.
This black alpaca yarn, thanks to its intense natural color and outstanding characteristics, has positioned itself as a key input in the textile and fashion industry. Its production process avoids the use of dyes, reducing water consumption and CO2 emissions, aligning more with a sustainable fashion trend and a way of living and acting.
Finally, with over five decades of experience, Inca Tops has successfully led the global production of the highest quality alpaca tops and yarns. Our product range extends to wool, cotton, and mixed yarns and tops with other noble fibers, aimed at the industrial and hand weaving markets.
Pride. We are proud to know that our contribution not only generates tangible benefits for a broad spectrum of corporate stakeholders but also improves the quality of life for producing families and society at large.
